Owlpoo exhibited at the Dubai Character and Licensing Show!

October 27th-29th was a very important date for Owlpoo, as I was able to exhibit my website and show my work to all visitors. Thanks to eye of Dubai, an online portal for everything Dubai, I was given my own space and large TV screen to show Owlpoo on big screen.

It was a very sucessful event which was greatly receieved and a lot of interest was formed. Owlpoo made numerous new contacts, clients and business opportunites.

Owlpoo will shortly be working very closely with schools and now we are working constantly to create Owlpoo into education software for children.

With new inspiration, new stories will be added soon. There will also be an option to translate the stories into arabic and have an audio feature.

See below, a new set of desert character have been created. These will eventually be stories promoting wildlife in the UAE. These are organic illustrations showing the gecko, caracal, camel and falcon.

Owlpoo can't wait for next Dubai Character and Licensing show in 2010!

Dubai Desert Scene - Owlpoo.com

Desert Mural

Over the hot summer months of Ramadan, I painted a Dubai Desert Scene on the wall of our bedroom (which is soon to be demolished!)

This scene depicts two arab men relaxing in the desert, playing music, eating arabic food and being surrounded by all of UAE's wildlife. The oasis contains flamingo's annd arabic leapards drinking from the pool.

Murals are an area that I plan to get into. I'd love the opportunity to do more, so if you're a nursery or school in Dubai wanting a scene, or anything creative on your walls, I'd be happy to get involved. I will even approach private homes, so why not provide your child with a unique bedroom wall which will delight eyes of all ages.

See below of images of the mural, any questions or queries contact me via the website.

Hermit in the heat!

The heat has been intolerable these last few months! With 40 + degrees meaning a short walk to the local shop turns into an all mighty sweat, I've transformed into an indoor hermit!

Owlpoo is in the process of business plan writing.Very soon the website will undergo further changes, and the stories will be part of a school incentive scheme program designed to persuade children to read. Features will include unlockable codes on books, characters you can print out and create and much more. Watch this space!

I've been doing a lot of research on Children's Publishing, I picked up this AMAZING book from Amazon called "Writing with Pictures" by Uri Shulevitz. It has such invaluabe advice for putting together your story/picture book. Methods such as storyboarding, creating a dummy book, page and text layout are all covered wonderfully! My hours before bedtime are engrossed with trying to cram in as much new information as I can from this masterpiece of a book!

I'm delighted to be working with Anne Millen and providing the illustrations for her story. Without giving too much away, it's a cleverly written manuscript describing the cycle of a hermit crab. I've come up with a very rough storyboard and sketches of zoeas (baby crabs!) and the character choosing it's shell! Will post full colour spreads soon.

For a side project, I've started painting a mural in James' room! The villa is soon to be demolished, and so many paintable walls are going to be turned to rubble. :( I've started creating a Desert scene featuring two Arabic men enjoying each others company surrounded by wildlife. It's just one of many murals that I aim to create as part of my portfolio. If anyone in the UAE would like a mural for their nursery or school, then give me a shout!

That's all for now!

Owlpoo.com - Near to its completion!

Owlpoo.com - Near to its final completion! Well, it surely has been a while since blogging! Since my last post in February a lot has happened personally and in the world of Owlpoo. A whole month in March and April consisted of finalising plans to move country, moving out and moving in went smoothly and now Owlpoo will be based in Dubai. :-)

I'm feeling more inspired than ever and recentely there has been a change in my drawing style. I began drawing an image for an up and coming story "The Albino Peacock" and decided to add much more thorough detail and began experimenting with different mediums. I produced an image that I was incredibly proud of, and decided that a lot of the images used in Foxgloves look pale in comparison. This made me re-think all my past drawings, and I have therefore had to remove old drawings and replace them with newer ones, perhaps changing the composition or adding more colour. I simply hated my past drawings and didn't want them featured on my site!

I'm SO excited to announce the launch of the Owlpoo website, it's so close, and I know that another hard day's work of preparing material such as moveable flowers, ;) mushrooms, ;) scrollbars ;) and new illustration etc means another day closer to the launch.

For those that don't know, Owlpoo is going to be an Organic Illustration Site, featuring Children's Stories and hand drawn animation. The illustrations are going to accompany hand written text, these stories will be written by myself.

Hands down, without my wonderfully inspiring James with his incredible knowledge of programming, non of the amazing features and interface of Owlpoo would be possible, a big big thank you with all my heart. :) Us two as illustrator and programmer have been working non-stop to get everything together.

I'm wanting to spill the beans about the website interface ;) but perhaps I shouldn't let words tell the story, but leave it to your own eyes. Owlpoo is going to be an interactive experience for children, with moveable character's on screen. It's nature in all its glory. That's all I'm going to say for now!

I'll leave you with a few new Illustrations, please feel free to give comments and suggestions! Not long until the launch, watch this space! www.owlpoo.com

Foxgloves - Final stages! www.owlpoo.com

Well, good news in the world of owlpoo!
Yesterday, I finished the “Foxgloves” story. It contains 9 pages, with embedded text and images. It fits directly to the website dimensions. Everything is imported to Flash, so all there is to do now is to get the buttons working so you can read through each page, then continue when needed. It’s really rewarding seeing everything fit into place!

I’m looking forward to showing it to everyone, so it can be viewed on the site. I want to approach primary schools and younger children to get their feedback on the story and illustrations. If I get mostly positive feedback, I’d like to eventually add simple animations to the story.

Next time I’ll post here is when the Foxgloves story will be available to view off my site, in full finished glory!

That’s all for now, I’ll leave you with an example page from the story of Foxgloves:-

Foxgloves children's story! 1st edition! www.owlpoo.com

These last few days I've been writting the text for the Foxgloves story. I've always enjoyed the thrill of writing, and putting pen back to paper was a really enjoyable experience for me.

I wrote Foxgloves all in one go, and it was 4 pages long. Looking through it a few times, and getting feedback, I realised that a LOT of things didn't make sense. Word's and ideas were perhaps too complicated for children. Sentences were too sophisticated, therefore I had to minimise and shorten each paragraph. Extravagent words had to be replaced with more simpler, children - friendly ones. This process, however, did give me an idea for the site. I thought I could have different versions of the story. The same principals, but suitable for a certain age range. Users of the site could select their age range (whether it being 3-6, 7-11, 12-16 etc) and then they could read the story in the version that's apt for them. If that certain version of the story is too complicated or difficult to read, or the opposite, then they can upgrade or downgrade to the other version.

This version is aimed at 8-11 year olds. There is also a version with more complicated vocabulary for 12-15 year olds.

Advice, comments and critique would be fully appreciated. I know further editing may be required, and this won't be the final version put on the site.

Two Questions:-
When the fox, adder and owl speak, they speak in rhymes of two lines. Do you think two lines is enough, or should I turn their dialogue into four line poetry?
Do you think the story's writing aims towards 8-11 year olds, or younger or older?

Around 10-13 Illustrations to follow for the site which are near completion. :)

Here goes....

Foxgloves

Deep in the forest was a rocky cave. In it lived a curious creature with emerald green eyes and a bushy tail. For this creature, every day was a new adventure, and today would be no exception. As dawn broke, and the forest animals began to stir, a coat of flaming red sprang out from the cave. It was the forest fox!

“What a wonderful morning in all its glory,
Today I begin a brand new story!”

The Fox wondered what new and exciting sights he would see today. He walked slowly through the forest, passing leaves of every green shade, with rocks beneath his feet, and floating butterflies above him. He arrived at a green hedge, and wondered what could possibly be behind it...
He slowly moved his slim body around the corner, some of the leaves prickling his sides. To his amazement, he saw rows of the most beautiful flowers he had ever seen! They were so tall! Even taller that The Fox himself.

“A pink delight that pleases my eyes,
A beautiful flower, a lovely surprise!”

The flowers were a wonderful shade of pink and shaped like a mitten. They had delicate folds on one side, with a funnel containing specks of many different colours. The Fox thought the flowers were so beautiful, that he wanted to touch them. As he reached up towards one of the flowers, he noticed that it easily fitted over his paw. It felt snug and warm, which gave him an idea! The Fox had thought that the nights were getting very cold, perhaps these perfectly shaped flowers could keep his paws warm as he slept.

He decided to pick the four best flowers that would fit his paws well. He only took what he needed as he wanted to preserve the beauty of the plant for all the other animals to enjoy. Calling them his “Foxgloves” he carefully placed one paw inside each flower. He loved his new discovery, and decided to show them to all the animals of the forest. The animals looked up to him and loved the way the new Foxgloves fitted his feet.

The Fox headed back to his home, leaving footprints in his path. Little did he know that he was being watched from above. The old woodland adder was coiled around a sturdy branch, studying his every move. His scaly skin was stained with dark, black zigzags, which brought fear to the innocent creatures he passed. The adder was known by many for his bitterness and envy. Not having any legs made getting around the forest very difficult, and seeing The Fox prancing about so happily, made the adder very jealous.

“Coat of sssun, and legs that rrrun,
but look at me, I have no fffun.”

The adder decided to take revenge against The Fox. He knew The Fox loved his gloves, and thought of a way to destroy them. Very slowly, he began to slither down the branch, and follow The Fox’s tracks...
All day long The Fox proudly wore his Foxgloves, and as night fell, The Fox wearily entered his cave, ready for a good night’s sleep. He carefully removed the gloves and placed them by his side. They were his pride and joy, and he didn’t want to risk losing them. As The Fox slept peacefully, the adder caught up to his tracks. He slithered slowly into The Fox’s cave, and didn’t make a sound as The Fox snored in his sleep. With one swift bite, the adder’s venomous fangs bit into each of the four Foxgloves, covering them with poison. The adder’s tongue flickered wildly with the excitement of what he’d done. He quickly slithered out and away from of sight. The Fox, deep in his dreams, had no idea of what had just happened.

Later that night, The Fox awoke to an icy chill that swept through the cave. His paws were cold, so he reached for his new Foxgloves. He noticed that they felt damp, so took them off and licked his paws. He thought that water had dripped from the roof of the cave into the gloves. He did not know it was poison. Wearily, The Fox put the gloves back on his paws, and went back to sleep.

The next morning The Fox woke up later than usual. A sharp, gushing pain swept across his paws, and he howled in agony as he pulled The Foxgloves from them. Looking at his paws, they were red, with what looked like warts spread across them.

With difficulty, The Fox placed his paws in the river for some relief. The pain stopped for a while, but soon returned. He could hardly walk, each tread of his paw was painful, but he was determined to warn all other animals of these deadly Foxgloves.

The woodland owl observed The Fox limping from above.

“Why so down and glum today?
You’re The Fox that likes to play!”

“Foxgloves! They didn’t live up to their name!” he cried in despair. The Fox explained the story to the owl, from beginning to end.

“Deep in the forest, there lives a flower,
The beauty of which, beholds a power.
Completely blinded by my pride,
I couldn’t see, the evil inside!”

He pleaded...

“If I had wings, I would not care,
I’d fly to every soul out there”
“But, wise owl, my feet feel burned,
Please tell all of the lesson I’ve learned”

Immediately the owl took to the skies, word would spread much quicker by wing than by painful paw. The Fox wondered whether he would survive the day, but his spirit was strong, and he decided to continue on his mission. He noticed that one wart on his paw began to fade. Eventually, he approached a den. Inside, were a vixen and her cubs. He felt better warning them as he did not want the same awful experience to happen to another of his kind. Walking away, more warts seemed to disappear. Slowly, but surely, with each passing animal that he warned, the warts began to disappear. It was as if nature was healing his wounds with each kind warning. The Fox was feeling better in mind and in body, and with each new stride, pain turned to pleasure, and limp turned to leap. He jumped with glee and was thankful for his new energy and life. Once more, the animals looked up to him in admiration.

To this day, every Foxglove plant in every forest across the world contains the adders poison.
This is The Fox’s story.

Owlpoo.com - New Illustration for “Foxgloves!”

These last few days have been very productive in terms of new illustrations.

So far, I’ve created 10 illustrations which are going to feature in the “Foxgloves” story. These were created using watercolours and a black fine liner pen. I’m happy with what I’ve created so far, some need editing, but some are looking more final now.

I’ve really enjoyed begininng to write the text for this story. As I like to write poetry, I’ve decided to include rhyme or riddles as part of the animals dialogue. Foxgloves is going to feature a jealous adder which tries to tempt the fox, he may speak in riddles to confuse him.
The fox may talk about the adder in this way:- “He speaks in riddles, and confuse me. Is he good or bad? I cannot see…”

This week I’m going to continue writting the text, and eventually I can then play out the page layout for the text and illustrations. It won’t be too long until it’s fully up online! :D

Have made some art contacts in Dubai which may be quite promising!

I’ll leave you all today with one of the 10 illustrations…this one is titled “adder spy,” with the snake watching the fox’s every move….

Owlpoo.com - A learning curve...

Owlpoo is officially back from holiday and working hard to the bone!

During my time in Thailand I gained a lot of inspiration and new ideas relating to stories and the website layout. Currently owlpoo shows a forest scene and will contain forest animals. I want to create new environments such as desert, (inspired by Dubai) rainforest (Thailand) and many more!

In between modeling jobs I can continue working piece by piece. Slowly but surely things are beginning to come together.

My mission was to complete the "foxgloves" story by February. Have all scenes animated and uploaded. However, I'm quite a slow animater, and through doing this uploaded short scene, realised that I'd made quite a few mistakes whilse making this animation. I should have layered things, and through spending nearly 4 days on this short upload, I think i've learnt a lot, and know how to complete the next animation in a shorter time, and produce it better quality.

In order for the website to be fully launched and functionable, I'm going to approach working on it in a different way.Foxlgoves is going to have several static illustrations now with text, in order to demonstrate page layout to viewers. There will be an interactive element which I will announce in due time ;)

Next week I'm going to begin on sketches, then delve straight into fully coloured illustrations. The menus of the website will change, but I don't want to reveal all my secrets too soon! ;)

Here is the scene where the fox picks up a glove, a digging animation will come before this eventually. Unfortunately when I upload it here it loses quality (same as youtube).

In Dubai next month there is going to be a writers fair! I'm straight there, as new writers may need a illustrator! especially childrens writers! Must print out temporary business cards!

That's all for now from the wonderful word of owlpoo!
